About the Car:
On June 23, 1991, the Mazda 787B #55, driven by Volker Weidler, Johnny Herbert, and Bertrand Gachot, crossed the finish line at the Circuit de la Sarthe to claim overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This historic win made Mazda the first Japanese manufacturer to ever win the world’s most prestigious endurance race. The car was powered by the unique R26B, a 2.6-liter 4-rotor Wankel rotary engine that produced over 700 horsepower and a spine-tingling, high-pitched exhaust note. The 787B completed 362 laps (3,065 miles) at an average speed of 127.62 mph, proving the reliability and speed of rotary technology against the established V12 and V8 competitors. To this day, it remains the only car with a rotary engine to have ever won Le Mans.
