About the Car

Introduced in 1972 for the 1973 model year, the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 was born out of sheer motorsport necessity. Built as a homologation special to allow Porsche to compete in Group 4 racing, it was the first 911 to ever bear the “Carrera” name. At its mechanical heart was a bored-out 2.7-liter flat-six engine equipped with Bosch mechanical fuel injection (MFI), producing a formidable 210 horsepower (PS) at 6,300 rpm. To ensure high-speed stability on the track, Porsche engineers, led by aerodynamicist Tilman Brodbeck, developed the now-legendary rear spoiler known as the “Bürzel” (ducktail), which drastically reduced aerodynamic rear lift. Paired with significant weight reduction measures—including thinner gauge steel and lighter glass—the Carrera RS 2.7 became a razor-sharp, track-focused weapon that cemented the 911’s status as a dominant force in international motorsport.
